In the East of Turkey and close to the Syrian border, Mardin has always been a \u201cno-go\u201d place for most foreign embassies and a city that even many Turks avoid. But despite its bad propaganda, Mardin is an absolute gem and a must-see in Turkey. Romantic? Are you serious?\u201d<\/em> he complained.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cWell, I am sorry, but you know I\u2019m not a big fan of Paris or such places. Mardin has been on my bucket list <\/em>forever,<em> and being small, beautiful, and remote, I don\u2019t see why it\u2019s not perfect for our first trip together.\u201d<\/em> I replied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cBut most people in Turkey think it\u2019s unsafe.<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201c<\/em>Well, if I had listened to what \u2018most people\u2019 or the media say about some places, I would have never moved to <a href=\"\/?cat_ID=33\">Turkey<\/a> and we would never have met. Let\u2019s please <a href=\"\/?p=1744\">ignore people who talk negatively about places they have never been.<\/a><em>\u201d\u00a0<\/em>I concluded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That still didn\u2019t convince him, and I thought I would have to visit Mardin on my own, just as I had traveled to other places in the past. However, a few days later, after we had a small fight and I was a little upset, I received a sweet Whatsapp message from him that said:\u00a0<em>\u201c<\/em><strong>So, when do we book our tickets to Mardin?<em>\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong> He had accepted the idea and I was thrilled! However, we still had time to visit Mardin and some other amazing places nearby (like Midyat and Mor Gabriel). Here you have some ideas for your trip to Mardin:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #f005a5;\"><strong>01 | Get lost in Eski Mardin<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Just wander around the old town of Mardin and enjoy the incredible views, the stunning architecture, the narrow walkways, the tiny ancient doors, the old limestone houses, the gorgeous <a href=\"\/?p=25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stray cats<\/a>, the children playing soccer, and more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The old town is hilly and full of stairs, but if you get tired, you can always take a break in one of the many Mardin rooftop cafes. These are the places we tried and enjoyed. As a non-meat-eater, my options were limited, but everything I tried was delicious!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cercismurat.com\/\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">Cercis Murat kona\u011f\u0131<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mardinbagdadi.com\/Bagdadi\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d\">Ba\u011fdad\u0131<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Restaurant_Review-g672951-d3575853-Reviews-Seyr_i_Merdin-Mardin_Mardin_Province.html\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\">Seyr-i Merdin<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tr.foursquare.com\/v\/beyzade-kona%25C4%259F%25C4%25B1-kahvalt%25C4%25B1--cafe\/570a4796498e6e5b95ca2f1e\">Beyzade Kona\u011f\u0131 Kahvalt\u0131 <\/a><\/span>\u00a0(this one is the best for a traditional breakfast!)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #f005a5;\"><strong>03 |\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Dance at a S\u0131ra gecesi\u00a0(S\u0131ra night)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At night, we went to Antik Sur Restaurant, where we attended a <em>s\u0131ra <\/em>gecesi.\u00a0S\u0131ra night is a show\u00a0where people gather together to eat, drink and listen to traditional music from the region. It was a lot of fun, with an abundance of loud and cheerful singing and dancing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #f005a5;\"><strong>04 |\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Visit Midyat<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An hour\u2019s drive from Mardin, we also visited the ancient town of Midyat. The historical city has the same colors of Mardin and plenty of Syriac Orthodox churches. The highlight is the old Midyat\u2019s Culture House. Founded in 397, Mor Gabriel is the oldest surviving Syriac Orthodox monastery in the world.
