Since childhood, I have been incredibly interested in its\u00a0culture and history; I listened\u00a0to African music, had a big African bucket list and\u00a0generally felt\u00a0connected to this huge and\u00a0complex continent. But the truth is, I did not\u00a0meet\u00a0many people who shared this interest. Most of my\u00a0friends dreamed\u00a0about places like\u00a0Paris or\u00a0New York, not remote African towns.<\/p>\n<p>It was not until I moved to Berlin in 2011\u00a0that I met\u00a0Kappi, a very\u00a0good friend and a soul mate in regards to Africanism. Kappi,\u00a0who lived in both Berlin and Dakar,\u00a0never stopped trying to persuade me to visit the country of her heart and, though\u00a0I was broke at that time and could not afford the ticket,\u00a0I knew someday I would see Senegal through Kappi&#8217;s eyes.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a02013, I finally\u00a0had the savings I needed and didn&#8217;t think twice before\u00a0booking\u00a0my flight, destination: Dakar. These are some of\u00a0my memories including a few\u00a0suggestions and advice to go backpacking Senegal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\"><strong>Senegal, an Introduction<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of Africa&#8217;s most stable nations, Senegal is not boring at all. Dakar, its\u00a0capital,\u00a0is a vivid introduction to the country, where\u00a0elegance meets chaos, noise, colorful\u00a0markets, and a vibrant nightlife. When the sun sets,\u00a0clubs fill\u00a0in with people dancing\u00a0sensually, while in the street you can clearly hear the call to prayer for\u00a0Muslim devotees. A contradiction? Being a country with no extreme climate conditions, welcoming\u00a0people and admissible facilities,\u00a0Senegal is considered the &#8220;soft Africa&#8221;.\u00a0Much less touristic and perhaps not as attractive as Tanzania and Kenya, Senegal is not a country to see, but rather to experience.<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\"><strong>Useful Information<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Languages:<\/strong> French and Wolof.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Religion:<\/strong>\u00a0mostly Muslim population (however, it feels like a\u00a0\u201cmore\u00a0open\u201c\u00a0version of Islam, in which\u00a0women have\u00a0a fairly active role).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Money:<\/strong> the unit of currency is the West African CFA franc\u00a0(1 \u20ac = around 656 CFA).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weather: <\/strong>Senegal\u2019s peak season goes from December to May when the\u00a0weather is pleasant and warm.\u00a0The rainy\/wet season normally begins in July and ends in\u00a0September. Temperatures are high in summer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\">But, Is it Safe to Travel to Senegal?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately,\u00a0Senegal has the stigma of insecurity and poverty as many other African countries. However, I must say\u00a0during the three weeks I spent in Senegal,\u00a0I never felt the slightest threat. Obviously, bad things can happen anywhere, and\u00a0you always need\u00a0to be careful, watch your pockets and bags\u00a0and use your common sense. I recommend not to bring anything of value you\u00a0would be sad to lose, \u00a0don&#8217;t carry too much cash and don&#8217;t walk\u00a0alone at night in the suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\">Senegal Packing List<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\">Health:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make sure to\u00a0get the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/ith\/vaccines\/yf\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\">Yellow Fever<\/a>\u00a0vaccination and to bring along the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/ihr\/ports_airports\/icvp\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\">International certificate of vaccination or prophylaxis<\/a> as proof of vaccination.\u00a0They probably will not ask for it at the airport, but have it handy.\u00a0It is recommended\u00a0to get vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B, Tetanus and\u00a0Typhus and to take antimalarial medication. If you don&#8217;t want\u00a0to take the Malaria prophylaxis, be very\u00a0vigilant about not being bitten too much. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B007FSHJRM?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B007FSHJRM&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=anonthro-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">good mosquito net<\/a> is\u00a0key!\u00a0Even if flats\/hotels have their own, it is better to trust yours, with no holes.<\/p>\n Get a rectangular mosquito net that you can attach from 4 corners.\n<p><strong>&#8211; Health insurance<\/strong>: I haven&#8217;t needed to use it in Senegal (and I am thankful for that), but while traveling,\u00a0you\u00a0never know what can\u00a0happen (especially when\u00a0you are in a country you are not familiar with).\u00a0<em>Never<\/em> consider your health insurance as a\u00a0waste of money, your health matters! I recommend getting your health insurance with <strong><a href=\"\/\/www.worldnomads.com\/Turnstile\/AffiliateLink?partnerCode=aotrsg&amp;source=&amp;utm_source=aotrsg&amp;utm_content=link&amp;path=https:\/\/www.worldnomads.com\/travel-insurance\" rel=\"nofollow\">World Nomads<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sunblock and after sun care.<\/li>\n<li>Mosquito spray.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0First aid kit (including\u00a0painkillers, antibacterial creams, and\u00a0anti-diarrheal drugs).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wet wipes (always a good idea is to have a little stash of toilet paper in your pocket&#8230;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\"><strong>What to Wear in Senegal:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Light,\u00a0loose, and long-legged clothing.\u00a0You\u00a0will have to hand-wash your own\u00a0clothes\u00a0while there, so bring things that dry quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Some tourists do wear shorts or little tank tops\u00a0but, since\u00a0everyone in Senegal covers their legs\u00a0pretty much,\u00a0I\u00a0don&#8217;t think it is appropriate. On a separate note, if you are going out at night,\u00a0that&#8217;s\u00a0a completely different thing! Then you can go\u00a0as sexy as you want! Remember that much of the stuff that is basic for us, it is\u00a0a luxury in Senegal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\">Backpacking Senegal: What to Visit<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\"><strong>Dakar<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of Senegal&#8217;s capital\u00a0is not really in its architecture, the dusty streets or the roads collapsed by traffic: but rather in its atmosphere and cheerful\u00a0people. The smiling locals walk through the city wearing flashy\u00a0clothes while causing a color explosion. Though it is worth a visit,\u00a0the center of Dakar is definitely not the best place for a\u00a0relaxing walk. Ngor is a great place for backpacking in Senegal.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed in a room in a guesthouse\u00a0near the beach called Chez Soukey. I do not remember the price, but it was a good value.\u00a0I could\u00a0not find it\u00a0online\u00a0but, if you travel\u00a0to Dakar and want to stay there, just\u00a0go to N&#8217;gor and ask around for it!<\/p>\n<p>N&#8217;gor beach is relatively clean and quiet. It is usually full of young people <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RfXnuG6X7cw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">playing djembe<\/a><\/strong>, street vendors and families. For 500 CFA, you can\u00a0go to\u00a0N&#8217;gor Island, which is just a short pirogue ride\u00a0from the beach.\u00a0N&#8217;gor Island is more touristic and peaceful. The algae\u00a0produces a red pigment to absorb the sunlight while\u00a0giving the lake its unique color. Getting around can be a real pain due to\u00a0bad road conditions, old cars with no air conditioning and, even worse, no fixed departure times (vehicles will only leave once when they\u2019re full).<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1437299590847_2447\">By far the most popular and fastest\u00a0way of getting around the country is by\u00a0sept-place\u00a0taxi (ramshackle\u00a0Peugeots 504\u00a0with three rows of seats that can\u00a0accommodate 7 passengers). Whoever\u00a0comes first, can sit\u00a0in the front beside the driver&#8217;s seat, while the last to come\u00a0will have to\u00a0squeeze in the back (but won&#8217;t need to wait till the car gets full).<\/p>\n<p>In the city, you can travel\u00a0by bus\u00a0or taxi. Since there are no indications in bus stops, it can\u00a0be time-consuming and difficult to figure out how to get around by bus. Going by taxi should be easier, but before getting in,\u00a0you will have to bargain the price with the driver. Your best bet is to ask a local how much would he pay for the journey you want to do\u00a0and then learn how to bargain with Senegalese taxi drivers. \u00a0It can seem challenging and a little scary at first, but after you get used to it, it becomes really fun!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\">Tip:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0if you can\u2019t get the price you have asked for, it\u2019s fine to say no. There are LOTS\u00a0of taxis to choose from in Dakar. When I could not get the price I wanted, I\u00a0started to walk away and the taxi driver called me back and gave me the price I asked for.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\">Sex and Sex Tourism<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite being a\u00a0Muslim country, sexual energy in Senegal is unleashed. You can feel it, smell it and, sadly, you can also buy it. It is not uncommon to see\u00a0European women\u00a0\u201cof a\u00a0certain age\u201c\u00a0going out with\u00a0much younger and more handsome Senegalese men (and vice versa).\u00a0The growth of Senegal&#8217;s sex tourism has its roots in the poverty and lack of jobs and opportunities\u00a0for the country&#8217;s youngest people (being\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indexmundi.com\/senegal\/unemployment_rate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senegal&#8217;s unemployment rate<\/a>\u00a0more than\u00a040%). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpost.com\/dispatch\/senegal\/100428\/senegal-news-sex-tourism?page=0,0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read this article to know more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re white (especially if you&#8217;re a white woman), you will need\u00a0to get used to being the center of attention: everyone will want\u00a0to talk to you. However, at least in my experience, I never felt harassed. I have traveled to other countries\u00a0where I have felt awkward because of the way some guys were looking at me or the kind of comments they were making. This was not the case in Senegal\u00a0where, despite being\u00a0surrounded by men almost at all times,\u00a0I never felt harassment, but\u00a0only\u00a0genuine interest.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a woman, you will attract\u00a0attention\u00a0and people (men in particular) will come to talk to you. Many will give\u00a0you a compliment, the cheekiest ones will ask you out&#8230; If this\u00a0bothers you, just say &#8220;no, merci&#8221; and smile. Smile all the time\u00a0and everything\u00a0will be all right. It is very important\u00a0to come prepared to laugh\u00a0a lot and don&#8217;t take anything too seriously.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\">Getting Inspired<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you are curious and want to know more about Senegal, start immersing yourself in Senegalese culture. Here are a few recommendations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #fa0785;\">Music<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m a fond\u00a0of African music: before, during, and after my\u00a0trip, I soaked up Senegalese music. Senegal is defined by its small details:\u00a0the\u00a0baobabs, the teranga (hospitality of its people) and the smiles of the children that you&#8217;ll meet, who\u00a0will love to talk and\u00a0play with\u00a0the toubabs (white). You will be captivated by the colorful pirogues\u00a0of the fishermen, the flashy\u00a0dresses of the women, the sounds of the djembe, the endless dancing nights, the mythical sept-places (and all the stories that will happen to you inside them) and the eternal\u00a0African sunsets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0was definitely one of the most significant travel experiences that I have had and is one of the places\u00a0I am most\u00a0fond of. I met a Senegalese friend who complained about how difficult living\u00a0in Senegal was. He complained that he\u00a0did not have a job\u00a0and when he got one, he could only afford\u00a0unsatisfactory living conditions. He complained he had no money to get a\u00a0driving license and he dreamed of being able to buy a guitar someday. I recently talked\u00a0to him on Skype and he told me that he got married to a European girl and is now living\u00a0in Belgium. However, every time we talk, he tells me how much he misses Senegal, he says\u00a0Europe is cold and\u00a0people are not happy. He is sad because this is not like\u00a0Senegal and is already dreaming of coming back.
