Kuala Lumpur is one of the major airline’s hubs in Asia. Because of this, most\u00a0travelers visiting Southeast Asia will probably stop in Malaysia’s capital at some point. If this is your case, I urge you to get out of the airport and spend at least 2 days in Kuala Lumpur. In this post, you will find some ideas of things you can do in this fantastic\u00a0city.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To be honest, Malaysia was not in my bucket list for Southeast Asia<\/a> and the only reason I visited Kuala Lumpur, back in 2015, was because I needed to travel back to the Philippines<\/a>\u00a0from Cambodia; it was cheaper doing via KL\u00a0than buying a direct flight. So, I decided to stop over in Malaysia and, while I was at it,\u00a0have a look at its cosmopolitan capital. To be honest, after not having enjoyed most of the big cities I visited in\u00a0Southeast Asia (Manila<\/a>, Singapore, Cebu, Jakarta, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City…), I did not have huge\u00a0expectations about\u00a0Kuala Lumpur. However, from the moment I landed in Malaysia, I knew it would be different with KL… I was meant to love this city! And indeed, after spending 2 days in Kuala Lumpur, I went back to the\u00a0Philippines<\/a>\u00a0regretting not having\u00a0spent more time in\u00a0Malaysia and knowing I would come back someday.<\/p>\n

Top 5 Things to Do in 2 days in Kuala Lumpur<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

01 | Enjoy the Views from Regalia Infinity Pool.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Are you spending 2 days in Kuala Lumpur? I urge you to stay in Regalia Residence!<\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

The time I spent in the infinity pool on the rooftop of the\u00a0Regalia Residence\u00a0building,<\/a>\u00a0where my\u00a0Airbnb\u00a0apartment was located, was the highlight of my 2 days in Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n

The truth is, I was backpacking Southeast Asia on a budget and always tried to spend as little as possible on accommodation. However, after weeks staying in dorms in Vietnam and Thailand (almost always sticking to\u00a0a budget of less than $10 per night), I decided it was about time to treat myself a little bit in Kuala Lumpur!<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, I spent most of 2 days in Kuala Lumpur\u00a0swimming and hanging out in the Regalia infinity pool. It\u00a0was so hard to leave! And anyway,\u00a0there was no need to because\u00a0I had the very best views from the city.\u00a0Apart from that,\u00a0it was\u00a0also a\u00a0great place to hang out and meet new friends. One of the things\u00a0I liked most about Kuala Lumpur was indeed that, it is such a multicultural, cosmopolitan and open city! In the 48 hours I spent there, I met people from all over the world (Spain, Nigeria, Iran, China, Egypt…) and had a great time.<\/p>\n

Getting there:<\/strong><\/span> if coming from the airport,\u00a0get\u00a0the\u00a0Klia ekspres\u00a0train<\/a>. A one-way ticket\u00a0costs 35MYR\u00a0(around 10$) and will take you to\u00a0KL Sentral station in 33 minutes. From KL Sentral station, you can get the KTM Komuter train to Putra (you will see\u00a0Regalia Building right outside\u00a0Putra station).<\/p>\n

Petronas towers when the sun sets.<\/p><\/div>\n

02 | Take a Selfie under\u00a0the Petronas Twin Towers<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

You can not visit\u00a0KL\u00a0without seeing the\u00a0Petronas twin towers<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>Kuala Lumpur’s\u00a0top tourist draw.\u00a0<\/strong>Visible from nearly every corner of the city, they are almost impossible to miss!\u00a0The\u00a088-floor twin structure\u00a0were the\u00a0tallest buildings in the world\u00a0from 1998 to 2003\u00a0and still retain the title of\u00a0the world’s\u00a0tallest twin towers.<\/p>\n

You can go up inside the towers for 84 MYR ($23 \/\u00a0\u20ac20) to see amazing views of the city. Issuing of tickets starts from 8.30am on a first come, first served basis.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, I did not have time to visit the inside of the towers but, of course, got to see them from many different viewpoints throughout the city.<\/p>\n

I did visit\u00a0the Suria KLCC,\u00a0a fancy\u00a0mall underneath the towers. The surrounding parks are also beautiful and the perfect place to take tons of\u00a0touristy selfies with the towers as a backdrop.<\/p>\n

03 |\u00a0<\/strong>Visit the Batu Caves<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Another must-see in Kuala Lumpur is visiting the incredible\u00a0Batu Caves,\u00a0a limestone hill comprising three major\u00a0caves, featuring temples and Hindu shrines. Guarded by an impressive 43-meter high statue of Lord Murugan, Batu Caves complex is the most important Hindu temple outside of India and has become a pilgrimage site for Hindus from all over the world.<\/p>\n

The good news is that admission is free and the bad news is that\u00a0you will need to climb\u00a0272 steep steps to access the caves and explore the\u00a0colorful Hindu temples and shrines inside.<\/p>\n

Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur. To the right of the stairs is the worlds largest statue of Lord Murugan (43 meters high).<\/p><\/div>\n

Beware, monkeys in Batu Caves will steal any chocolate you have!<\/p><\/div>\n

Something you need to consider is\u00a0there are lots of not-very-friendly monkeys living inside and around the caves, and apparently, they love\u00a0chocolate! For your own safety,\u00a0make sure not to bring any food\u00a0with you.<\/p>\n

Getting there:<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>The Batu Caves are located\u00a0thirteen kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur and you\u00a0can easily get there by public transport. The\u00a0KTM commuter train runs every 30 minutes from KL Sentral train station straight to the Batu Caves. A return ticket costs only 4MYR (1$).<\/p>\n

04 |\u00a0Eat New Foods!<\/span><\/h2>\n

You will find amazing authentic Indian food in KL!<\/p><\/div>\n

Food in Kuala Lumpur is\u00a0tasty and varied due to all the different cultures that make up Malaysia. Especially, if you are a vegetarian, you will be delighted in KL! Since there are lots of Hindus living in Malaysia, you will find yummy\u00a0vegetarian Indian food\u00a0everywhere!<\/p>\n

Don’t forget to check out\u00a0Jalan Alor Street<\/a> in Bukit Bintang for cheap and tasty street food and the neighborhoods of\u00a0China Town and\u00a0Little India.<\/p>\n

Getting there:<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>To go to Jalan Alor, take the monorail 8 from KL Sentral to Bukit Bintang.<\/p>\n

If you’re into shopping, you are going to love\u00a0Petaling Street<\/strong> in Chinatown! It’s a bustling place with lots\u00a0of stalls where you can find pretty\u00a0much everything: souvenirs, clothes, shoes, bags, electronics, etc… Learn to bargain and get the best deals!<\/p>\n

Getting there:\u00a0<\/strong>Take the pink line (5 Kelana Jaya) to Pasar Seni and walk from there.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Petaling Street, Chinatown (Kuala Lumpur)<\/p><\/div>\n

In short, there are so many things to do in this city that 2 days in Kuala Lumpur won’t ever be enough! The city was one of the biggest surprises of my trip and my favorite big city in Southeast Asia so far.\u00a0The\u00a0good\u00a0news\u00a0is, that\u00a0being\u00a0Kuala\u00a0Lumpur’s airport\u00a0one of the major\u00a0airline\u00a0hubs in\u00a0Southeast Asia<\/a>, flying to the capital of Malaysia is usually cheaper than to any other city in the neighboring countries (except for Singapore, possibly).\u00a0If you happen to\u00a0stop over in Kuala Lumpur, get out of the airport and explore! If you like\u00a0multicultural, cosmopolitan and\u00a0modern cities\u00a0where you can enjoy high living standards on a budget and fantastic food, I promise\u00a0you will love Kuala Lumpur as much as I did!<\/p>\n
